Flat sheets are great for those who love a clean bed and don't like to wash the duvet covers frequently. The sheet can be used to prevent the duvet cover from getting dirty and to reduce the frequency with which you need to wash it.
If you don't like removing the sheet and having to lift the mattress, you can use a flat sheet to prevent the sheet from getting dirty! Many hotels to this day still make their beds with flat sheets at the top and bottom as it is easier to fold a flat sheet than a tight sheet and requires less lifting of the mattress.
